Ohio is lovely in January. Is this part of the Arnold Classic? No, not part of the Arnold. What drew me to this particular contest is that they are going to have an old-school double sledge lever for max reps as one of the events. That is one of my favorite events of all-time and you just don't see that event in contests anymore.

Update on my younger son's training. He is now able to do a pretty easy set of 100 pushups, and he is up to a set of 80 rep squats while wearing a 50 lb weight vest.
Training today for me will be squats, thick bar, sledge levering.

Thank you sir! It's a pretty amazing story with this kid. He's always been very shy and timid. And he is super-nice to everybody, always trying to make sure nobody is left out. Last football season he sat on the bench the entire time. The coaches never even looked at him; I'm not sure they even knew his name. He decided he wanted to do something about that. Right after the season was over, we started doing some bodyweight exercises. Mainly just squats and pushups. For an 11-year-old kid, he got really strong in a pretty short period of time. Eventually, we had to add weight to the squats, thus the weight vest. Then we started adding in a few other movements, stuff like some DB military presses, DB curls, and some block weights. We've since even added in some 1-hand DL's with a rolling handle. When this year's season started, he was like a completely different player out there. In practice, the coaches quickly realized that nobody could block him. They immediately put him at defensive end and had him rushing the passer. On offense he had high hopes of being a wide receiver, but when they found out how strong he was, they ended up putting him on the offensive line because he could not be pushed backwards. At first he was a little bummed about not getting the chance to be a receiver, but as the season went on, he started to love playing on the line. He's now being recruited by coaches from a couple different leagues in our area for next season. Part of these workouts being so successful for him, is the fact that he's gotten a lot stronger than what he was before. But I truly believe the real key, is that these workouts helped to give him the confidence he was lacking. He has definitely been bitten by the workout bug!

That's a great story about your son, especially the part about how his confidence has grown.

Great that your soon is doing well.
Does his league have tight ends? Combines blocking with receiving.

That's a great story about your son, especially the part about how his confidence has grown. Thanks Paul! Yes, it's pretty awesome what a little boost of confidence can do for a kid in his age range. He has never been one of the "cool kids", so he has always kind of doubted his ability to compete with those type of kids, but once he started working out all of the doubts went away. On a side note to all that, his goal for next season is to be a starter on both sides of the ball. His long term goal is to play high school football, but he also wants to be able to sneak away from the team and play with the school band at halftime of the games. He plays the baritone horn and definitely doesn't want to ever have to give that up.

They do have tight ends and I was thinking that would be a great option for him down the road. This past season, they mainly just used the tight ends to shuttle plays in to the QB, but as he gets a little older, I would assume the tight ends get a lot more action.

Workout update on my younger son. We had to add additional weight to his weight vest for squats. The vest is now at 60 lbs and it is completely full, we cannot add anymore weight to it. Once he starts handling this weight with ease, we will be forced to switch over to either regular back squats or hip belt squats.
Other than some continued tendonitis in my left elbow, my workouts have been going well. If I can stay on this path and remain relatively injury free, I will definitely be competing in a gripsport contest in OH in January. I spoke to the promoter of the contest and he said it would be fine for me to bring my son along, so he is pretty pumped about that. He would not be allowed to compete due to his age, but they will let him take some attempts throughout the contest, and that alone will be a great experience for him.

Great progress for you son with the vest.
Keeping my fingers crossed that your elbow (and the rest of you) stays healthy and that's great that you son can attend with you.

Damn that's great. I have been tinkering with a weighted vest and trying to come up with a workout routine that uses it to train legs, which is the thing I hate to train at the gym and would be most convenient to train on a day when I don't have the access to go.

Well, the contest is two weeks out from today.......and by some small miracle, I have managed to remain injury free. Hotel is booked and vacation days from work are scheduled. No backing out now. My younger son will be making the trip with me and he is totally pumped about it. The contest will consist of five different events. Three of them will be deadlift based, the fourth will be a medley of 20 -25 different implements and the goal is to lift as many of them as you can in an allotted amount of time, and the last event is the one I'm the most excited about, it's a double sledge lever for max reps. I didn't train the deadlift events nearly as hard as I would have when I was younger, mainly because I didn't want to risk any type of lower back injury. So, my goal is to do "okay" on those three events and maybe finish somewhere in the middle of the pack. I've always been fairly good at the medley events, so I'm again hoping to at least finish someplace in the middle. The double sledge for reps is where I'm hoping to do quite well. I've been training hammers 1 -2 times per week for probably the last 15 years or so and I feel like I should be able to put up some big numbers there. At 54-years-old I'm probably "over the hill" for this type of contest, but I still feel like I can be fairly competitive and I'm super-excited about having my son there with me. Hoping for the best!
Happy New Year to all!!!!!!!
