IROC, you make a very good point about the positives and negatives of HS sports. Writing as the father of a HS volleyball and softball player for all of her years at our four year HS, as well as someone whose daughter played travel softball for our town, some parents are just nuts; pushing their kids to do something they don't want to do, berating coaches and umpires, and having an unrealistic view of the talent level of their child. I could write a novella about incidents I've seen and phone calls made to me from other parents wanting me to push dear daughter to do what THEY wanted her to do "for the good of the team." Here's a quickie example:
DD had been playing travel ball so she was known around town among those that followed softball when she started HS. She pitched and played outfield. She also had a very rigorous academic schedule and was taking piano lessons. She had one morning to sleep in and that was on Sunday. Her HS coach suggested that if she wanted to continue pitching she would need to start taking professional lessons with a pitching coach on Sundays at 8:00 and he was about 45 minutes away. I refused; like your son she was in 9th grade and adding more to her plate would have just led to burnout. Not only did the coach talk to me a few more times about this, but other parents would either call me at home or speak to me at her games to try and convince me to change my mind. One parent even suggested that she drop the piano lessons to give her more time because she wasn't going to be a professional musician. My response to that was, "Guess what, she isn't going to be a professional ball player either." End result was that she became a full time outfielder the following season, continued with her high level academics and piano lessons, and enjoyed her HS experience much more than if she lost that one morning to recharge her batteries and be a 15 year old.

Exactly! The situation you're referencing above, is everything that is wrong with youth sports.

That's an impressive BP. Damn Thanks buddy! One of my goals has always been to bench 275 for a set of 20 T&G reps. I have never hit that. At this point, I'm probably too old to achieve that goal, but I'm going to attempt it again this year. I hit 245 for 20 reps this week, and I still had a little in the tank.

I've been doing a two mile walk twice per week for the past couple of weeks now, and I don't mind it at all. It's actually been way more tolerable than what I expected. This is currently my only form of cardio. The next closest thing to cardio that I'm doing would be sets of 20 rep squats. I've been following my walks with one set of high rep hammer curls and a high rep set of ab wheel roll outs.

It was a wasted week for me as far as fitness goes. I felt a very slight tweak in my left lower back area the other day while doing Axle DL's, and I figured it would be fine by the following day. Well, it actually took until today to feel 100%. Back at it tomorrow, I guess.

Workouts are going well. I'm still hoping to hit my lifetime goal of bench pressing 275 for 20 reps within this year. I realize I'm probably on the wrong side of 50 to achieve this, but I'm still feeling pretty good and want to give it a shot. I hit 250 for 19 reps on Friday. All my thick bar lifts are at an all-time high right now, so that's definitely going to be something I continue to make a priority throughout the year also.
I have to brag on my son a little bit here. He is just killing his workouts. He hit 105 for 50 reps on the hip belt squat this week. Just to put that in perspective, I've found you can do about half as much weight on the hip belt set up we have as compared to when you're doing actual back squats. So that's somewhat comparable to doing 210 for 50 reps on the back squat. Not bad at all for him being 15-years-old and weighing 155 lbs. He is completely devastated that they had to cancel track & field season here because of the coronavirus. At the time they cancelled, he was the number one rated ninth grader in his conference for the discus throw. Needless to say, he had very high hopes for the season. He's instead going to focus on the weight room and come back way stronger for next year.

Uber impressive concerning what you and your son are accomplishing. Regarding the track and field, sad to say we're in a new world for a while. Still disappointing.

My son and I are still plugging away here. His workouts have been going really well and we've slowly been adding in more grip related movements. I'm thinking this kind of stuff will be a huge help to him down the road when it comes to discus and shotput throwing. I did manage to tweak my left wrist on some heavy plate curls this week, but I'm hoping that will be fine by Tuesday when I hit my next workout. Monday will probably just be a 2-3 mile walk. The county we live in has a population of about 79k and we are currently sitting at 5 confirmed cases of Covid-19. Although, our state is still on lockdown through the third week of May.......

"At the NFL combine, bench press is used as a test of muscle strength and stamina, in which athletes lift 225 pounds (102 kg) as many times as possible. Since 1999, only 17 men at the combine have managed to achieve more than 40 repetitions."
I think this would be a much cooler accomplishment.

When I was in my prime, I did hit 225 for 30 reps on a few occasions. No way would I be able to hit 40 reps.........especially now that I'm on the wrong side of 50.

My "off day" workouts still consist of lots of 2 - 3 mile walks, and I'm really enjoying it. The plan is to continue this type of cardio throughout the summer. What really inspired me to add in more cardio work, was the fact that a guy I grew up with passed away a few months ago of a heart attack. We were the same age and we were raised in the same neighborhood. This guy was always a great athlete from childhood through high school, and he appeared to still be in pretty decent shape the last time I saw him. I guess you never know........
