Going to continue my fitness journal from the original JSF forum over to this new forum. A big thank you to Graham for taking this on and getting things set up for the rest of us, we all really appreciate it!
This journal is going to be a bit different from my others, and I actually started that change over a year ago in my previous journal on JSF. I am going to log some of my own workouts, but I will also be logging some of my son's workouts too. Thus the title of "The Next Generation".
My workouts are pretty boring. Lots of squats, lots of bench pressing with accessory work, and lots and lots of grip related training sprinkled in. My son is now 15-years-old and has been on a steady diet of squats, pushups and pullups for the past few years. He can do sets of 100 pushups with the best of them, and he's also able to knock out a set of 30 pullups without too much of a struggle. Needless to say, we've put down a very solid base for him to build off with his strength training. We are now going to start adding in some actual bench presses, rows, and overhead presses.
Hope we can all stay connected on this new forum, and I wish you all the best!

Thanks guys, I appreciate the positive comments and support. I just went to check if the original JSF forums were still there, but unfortunately, they are now gone. It's a sad day for me. The cool part is that we all cared enough to come over to this new forum and continue on with the tradition.

My workout from 2/14/20 Bench Press Bent Rows Triceps Pushdowns Hammer Curls Band Pulls Heavy Hammer - pronation/supination
My son's workout from 2/14/20 Hip Belt Squat Bench Press Block Weights Hammer Curls
My son will being doing four different events for this year's track & field season - discus, shot put, long jump, 200m relay. I feel very confident that all the block weight training we've been doing will help him a great deal in the throwing events, and I also feel like all the hip belt squats will have a real good carryover to the long jump event. He stays after school every Tuesday and Thursday and does sprint/speed training with his coach in preparation for the relay event.

Wowza, that's a very varied skill set. Your son is very ambitious! I was kind of thinking the same thing, but the reality is that he probably won't get the opportunity to do much this year in the throwing events, because he'll be competing against 10, 11 and 12th graders for those spots. I figure these other two events will give him more of a level playing field against the older kids and will hopefully prevent him from getting discouraged.
My workout from 2/17/20 Hip Belt Squat Block Weight Trainer Plate Curls Wrist Roller Band GM's
Don't want to jinx anything, but I've been finding that as long as I do heavy band GM's a couple times per week, my lower back issues have been kept at bay. Not sure if it's just dumb luck, or if the GM's are really the reason for this, but I'm going to keep at it.

As the others have said, that is a nice cross section of events. Do high schools have the decathlon event? Does his school have a JV squad where he will get some competition experience in the throwing events too?

It's very impressive how much of a role sport seems to play in the US education system. In the UK it seems that a kick about of a (Soccer) Football once a week and maybe a half-hearted effort at some track and field events once in awhile is about as far as sports/physical education goes.

I haven't heard any mention of a decathlon event, but I don't have much knowledge at all when it comes to track and field. I played baseball throughout my high school days and that was always during track season, so I don't have any experience to draw on. I'm going to ask some questions about it, though. His school does have a JV team, but I'm thinking that may even be difficult for a 9th grader to get much of a chance in the throwing events. My son is about 150 lbs and it looks to me like many of the other throwers are in the 200 lb range. We'll see how it goes......hoping for the best!

It's actually good and bad. Sometimes I feel like sports plays way too big of a role in our schools. Some of the parents get pretty crazy about things and push the kids pretty hard. I'm trying not to do that with my son. So far, it's been his idea to play the sports he's played, and he's working out with me because he wants to and because he enjoys it. I've been trying to let him follow his own path, and so far that seems to be working well.
